Heart of Tamworth launches men’s group

Heart of Tamworth Community Project (HOT) has launched a men’s group for those who are experiencing isolation and loneliness. They write:

It’s now known that one of the biggest problems facing people who have retired, been bereaved, are separated or divorced, or who are living alone is the feeling of isolation and loneliness. As we get older, these feelings can become overwhelming. Our health and self-esteem can suffer and our confidence drops.

For a man to suddenly find himself alone or at home without the routine of work, life can become very difficult. Other than going to the pub, many find it hard to meet like-minded men to have a chat with or play cards or darts with.

Recognising this gap, HOT teamed up with care-giving organisation Home Instead to open a Gentlemen’s Club. HOT provided a room and volunteers to help run it. Home Instead provided one of their male care-givers.

We didn’t know if anyone would come along, but when the first group opened in February, ten gentlemen turned up.

The group meets every Tuesday for a coffee, a chat about sport, a game of cards or dominos or just to be in the company of other men.

The hope for the future is that the group carries on growing. It hopes to organise regular trips in the future, as well as the weekly meetings.
